The demand for second-hand smartphones has led to a staggering 150 per cent increase in phone thefts across the UK, particularly street-level snatches.
Between March 2023 and March 2024, Crime Survey for England and Wales figures estimate that around 78,000 phones or bags were stolen. Many of these stolen devices are quickly shipped abroad, with some reportedly reaching destinations like China within days. Unfortunately, police are facing a significant challenge in recovering stolen phones, with less than 1 per cent of cases resulting in charges. Even with tracking tools like Find My iPhone, many victims are unable to retrieve their phones, as the devices are often dismantled for parts in international tech hubs, including Shenzhen.
The global trade in stolen phones complicates recovery efforts, and in response, the UK government is urging tech companies and phone manufacturers to enhance anti-theft measures. The aim is to expand features like remote tracking and disabling, while pushing for innovative solutions that prevent stolen phones from being resold or re-registered.

iPhone users should enable Lost Mode via Find My iPhone, while Android users can use Find My Device to lock their phone and prevent access to personal data. Disabling payment services like Apple Pay if your phone is stolen is also strongly advised.
